World War 1 Gunners

Gunner (Gnr) is a rank equivalent to private in the British Army Royal Artillery and the artillery corps of other Commonwealth armies.The next highest rank is usually lance-bombardier, although in the Royal Canadian Artillery it is bombardier. Gunners can also be referred to as shooters, artilleryman and cannoneer.

 

Army gunners provide fire support to the front line during the war. Gunners were able to train in a number of specialist gunner branches to better their ability as a gunner. Gunners uses guns, ammunition and mortars. Through this there was a field gun, they shot shells on a low trajectory usually with their target in sight. Shells were highly explosive and cause a lot of destruction in the first world war. This artillery was given to brigades starting the war with 15 pounders.

 

During the war the the amount of artillery and types began to expand, gunners knowledge expanded leading to scientific principles that accounted for weather and atmospheric conditions, as well as new tactics, they were better able to locate, target, and destroy gun batteries, which suffered increasing shortages of shells and guns throughout the war from the naval blockade.

 

Machine gun;  A machine gun is a fully automatic mounted or portable firearm designed to fire bullets in quick succession from an ammunition belt or magazine, typically at a rate of 300 to 1800 rounds per minute. These guns took multiple men to operate because of the many tasks needed to be performed to properly work. Machine guns were commonly know in the first world war

Soldier in the trenches using the walls to comfortable have a view over enemy trenches. The trenches were mud and dirt but protected an saved many lives during the Great War.
